E-mail: steve @ mutaytor.com Builder of strange sounding contraptions that one can whack Rhythmatist in search of the true meaning of Gong… A lover of all things strange and absurd Usually listens in stereo Steve Reid percussionist and extraordinary rhythm maniac is a recognizable name to many music enthusiasts He has played on over 1200 recordings produced several gold records worldwide and was named Jazziz Magazine “Percussionist Of The Year” four consecutive times Steve received Drum Magazine “World Music Percussionist of the Year “ in 2002. He has toured the world extensively as a member of Supertramp and as a founding member of the Rippingtons one of the most successful pop jazz groups of the decade (with five #1 billboard sales awards) Steve holds a Grammy for his work with the legendary Miles Davis whom quoted Steve as "One of the most imaginative percussionists of the decade " A prolific composer with five solo records internationally released Steve has toured the world with a renown band of all stars known as Steve Reid's Bamboo Forest Steve Reid's charismatic and artistic style of creating rich rhythmic textures has had fans raving at shows for over years Reid launched "The Sonic Jungle " a full music and multi media recording production facility in Los Angeles Where when not touring Reid produces records for other artists and music for his most recent project “Dream Scapes “ Past and current credits include The Rolling Stones "Voodoo Lounge" CD ROM the hit TV show "Home Improvement " Steve Olivers current charting Smooth Jazz CD percussion and mixing on a up coming George Clinton Project and hundreds of various pop rock and R&B records Reid created "The Definitive Percussion Sampler " a library of ethnic world percussion sounds on CD ROM that has become a standard library for film composers and record producers Steve was first introduced to what would become Mutator when he has drawn by the infectious rhythms that Matty was laying down on the Playa at Burning Man years ago “ I came up and told Matty he sounded awesome and asked if I might come up and join him for a little percussion and drum Jam We hit it off like two lost brothers and the rest is history!” Reid also comments: “Playing in Mutator is full of musical highs and wonderful surprizes Its power over people is simply amazing and the family unit of Mutator goes beyond friendship faith creativity and love… Its truly beautiful ” Born and raised amid the natural magnificence of a Rocky Mountain landscape in Colorado Reid grew to be a child lost in a world of nature and music He began playing drums and guitar in the 4th grade By his 12th birthday he had also tackled the piano alto saxophone and congas At age 13 he won his first professional gig playing with a local honky tonk pianist Once a career minded teen aged musician he never looked back Since Reid created and continues to operate a charitable music outreach program providing "community drumming" instruction to those who need it most This innovative musical therapy has proven benefits for the physically disabled the culturally disadvantaged and at risk inner city youth Often appearing at events arranged by the non profit Musical Therapy Association Reid travels to schools hospitals convalescent homes and camps for the disabled and other similar settings where he teaches through "drum circles" of handmade and hand played drums Such classes can vary in size from as few as four to as many as four hundred or more Often many if not all drums used are from Reid's own private inventory of more than exotic handcrafted instruments Touring Credits: En Vogue, Supertramp, The Rippingtons, Miles Davis, Nicolette Larson, Dave Koz, Brian Bromberg, Marc Antoine, David Benoit, Frank Gambale, GRP All Stars, Rick Braun, Bobby Caldwell, Carl Anderson, T-Square, (special guest for tour of Japan) Keiko Matsui, Bamboo Forest, Dream Scapes and The Mutator.
